One of the first games I played back when I was still about twelve years old was The Sims, I loved it and so did my brothers and my mum, especially building a massive home with all the best items to create the ultimate home. I then bought The Sims 2 when it was released and I was amazed with all the new stuff available and the new available social interactions. The same happened with The Sims 3, every iteration of the franchise had new features that added a lot of potential to gameplay for every type of gamer, from the stay-at-home mum who wants to pass some time and the curious game developer who wants to get crazy and be god of his own little world.
The Sims 4 has now been released. EA has gone ahead and given us an awesome trailer, with a bunch of Twitter style hash-tags to appeal to the modern hipster culture.
They also showed us the amazing new building mechanics in the game, which to be fair, blew my mind. You can now build your home in many different shapes and sizes, a greater number of styles, a whole bunch of items for sale. You can even just expand your rooms or buy an preset room, fully-furnished. Overall, amazing! Just seeing this video back before the game was released, I was immediately sold.
However, let's talk about the negatives of the game. First off, no swimming pools. No way! One of the first things I knew would not go down well with me, I loved adding a pool to my high end mansion, what is a mansion without a pool?
Secondly, I want to talk about the Create a Sim feature, which has always been found in every Sims game. If one takes a look at the Sim creation in The Sims 3, one can easily notice how detailed this feature was, choosing from a massive list of styles and colors to design your character's clothes exactly the way you wanted them. I then had my mind blown when I found out that this feature was also available in styling other objects, such as walls, tiles, instruments, closets, etc.
However, in The Sims 4, no such feature is available. Create a Style (known as CASt) is not present in The Sims 4. After searching online for a reason, the only reasonable explenation was the following:
The game has a new mechanic where sims can feel different depending on what they wear and other sims might perceive your sim differently as well. For example, if a girl wears a red dress, she might feel more confident and a guy might find her more attractive. This leads to a problem with the color wheel; the game would not be able to decide what kind of attribute to give the sim depending on the color chosen from the combinations available.
As a game developer myself, I just want to say that this is just stupid; you can easily take the RGB values into consideration and give an attribute to each set of combinations for the colors you want to set. The rest? No bonus; simple.
Although having this mechanic is extremely interesting, giving a rise to creating new outfits for your sims depending on what you want to do, it also leads to one of the most important features going missing. Most of the people I know who were looking forward to playing this game complained about having no CASt system in place.
In conclusion; although I mentioned swimming pools being missing, I can live with that. But do not remove the color wheel and styling options.
