As my blog description clearly gives away, I am both a student and a teacher. I am reading for my Masters in Digital Games while teaching Basic Programming as my part time job. So I don't know where I really sit at on this argument.
I think that the education system is both lacking and restricting, something I'd say as a student would be: 'the system sucks'. Why? A lot of the assignments I worked on when I was studying programming felt unnecessary and were there simply to add an extra subject to study. For instance, we had to discuss same sex marriage in class as an assignment, to learn 'how to make a point' and 'how to show we disagree'. So as a student, I believe that the assignment system has some serious issues and should be revamped.
But then, at the same time, being a lecturer, I have no choice but to enforce the assignments system and make students work on said assignments, even if they are stupid and/or lame. Unfortunately, I do not have enough power to change anything.
